Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips
We know that a lawn mower can be a big investment, so you want it to provide a long life of reliable service. The best way to ensure that your mower lasts a long time is to perform routine maintenance on schedule. Not only will that keep it in the best condition, but it will also help you notice if anything is out of order, so you can address small problems before they become big problems.
Here are maintenance tips from the experienced team here at M2 Outdoor. We have two locations, in Dexter and Kennett, MO, where we also serve our neighbors from Bloomfield and beyond. We also have an ace service department to assist with any maintenance and repairs!
Consult Your Owner's Manual
Always keep your manual handy. It tells you about specific maintenance tasks and frequency. Plus, it advises which products you should/should not use. If you’ve got a warranty, it will inform you how not to void it.
Sharpen the Blade
A clean, pristine cut depends on a sharp blade. Many people like to keep a backup blade on hand, so they can swap blades and either hand-sharpen the spare or bring it into the pros for sharpening.
Keep the Undercarriage Clean
All that freshly-cut grass builds up under a mower, which can result in clogs, overheating, and decreased efficiency. With a walk-behind mower, tip it over and clean it out. Your manual will advise you on which side to turn it on. For a riding mower, drive it onto a ramp or blocks. Use a hose with a high-pressure nozzle to clear out debris.
Check and Change Oil
All gas or diesel-powered mowers have an oil reservoir, which helps keep the crankshaft and pistons lubricated. Check oil levels regularly with the handy dipstick. When oil is sludgy or discolored, it's due for a change of oil and filter. If you see any water or metal shavings in the oil, schedule a service appointment.
Change Out Spark Plugs
The typically recommended interval for spark plug replacement is one year. Buy pre-gapped plugs for the simplest swap. Check your manual for the correct gap.
Protect your investment with proper lawn mower maintenance. It’s a win-win: the machine will run better, last longer, and cost you less in repairs.
